  3. Child Custody Cases Should Always Consider The Children’s Best Interests

Most of us certainly can’t relate to the lifestyles of the rich and famous, except when it comes to our children and what’s best for them.

That’s why many people are watching with keen interest the child custody issue that’s playing out between actors Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt.

A family court judge ruled recently that Jolie must put more effort into encouraging a relationship between Pitt and their six children. If she doesn’t, the judge said, she could lose primary custody of the children, who range in age from 9 to 16. According to documents obtained by the media, the judge said the kids could suffer by “not having a relationship with their father.”

Media reports said Pitt organized his summer work commitments to maximize the time he could spend with the children but that Jolie had not cooperated.

The couple separated in September 2016, but their divorce is not yet final, largely because of custody issues. The divorce paperwork was filed in Los Angeles.

To encourage Pitt’s relationship with the children, the judge said Jolie must make sure each child has a cellphone and she must give Pitt their phone numbers. He is allowed to call them at any time, and Jolie may not monitor their conversations or read the text messages Pitt exchanges with the kids.

The judge also detailed a summer custody schedule that applies to the five younger children. At 16, the couple’s son may decide how often to see his father, the judge ruled.

Even though we don’t share the fame and fortune that public figures Pitt and Jolie do, we all love our kids just as much. An experienced family law attorney can help you make sure that you and your former partner work out a child custody solution that truly is in your best interest.
