According to a new study from Bowling Green State University, the divorce rate for people over the age of 50 has more than doubled in the past 20 years.
Data from the 2009 American Community Survey was used to determine whether baby boomers were divorcing at a faster rate than they were in 1990. In 1990, less than one in every 10 divorces involved couples over 50, but in 2009, they accounted for one in every four divorces.
The changing ideals of marriage and longer life spans are considered to be factors in the increased divorce rate for baby boomers. These individuals are expecting more out of their retirement years, and they are making sure they go through the rest of their life with the right person.

Thomas Beatie, dubbed the ‘pregnant man’ by the media, has been granted sole custody of his three children in his current divorce battle. The transgendered man was thrust into the spotlight in 2008 when he announced to the world that he was pregnant with his first child.
Beatie, born Tracy Lagondino in 1974, decided to have children when he found out his wife of nine years was unable to reproduce. In the span of three years, the couple welcomed three children into the world. Last month, Beatie was featured on a talk show where he revealed his marriage was in trouble.
One week after talking about his troubled marriage on air, Beatie filed for divorce from his wife. He made claims that his wife was physically and mentally abusive. Just recently, a judge declared that Beatie would have sole custody of all three of his children, and his future ex-wife would be allowed six hours a week of supervised visitation.

A 42-year-old veteran of the Air Force has sought the U.S. Supreme Court’s opinion in order to determine if it is unlawful to include disability payments in divorce proceedings.
The veteran, who spent his time in the Air Force, including responding at the Oklahoma City bombing, developed post-traumatic stress disorder as a result of his assignment.
This disorder eventually caused the man to be declared disabled, and he began receiving Social Security Disability Insurance and unemployment benefits from the state of Virginia. A judge in his divorce case ruled that these benefits would be included when calculating the amount of spousal support he owed his ex-wife each month.

The American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers has released the results of a survey regarding women and child support payments.
The results show that in the past three years, the amount women making monthly child support payments has increased. Of the lawyers that were surveyed, 56 percent of them noted that they saw a large increase in the number of women supporting their children after a divorce.
During that same three-year period, 44 percent of the attorneys also saw a rise in women making alimony payments to their former spouses. Although men still earn more than women across the board in the United States, a shift in financial income in modern households may contribute to this overall child support transition.

Usher has been in a court battle for the custody of his two children for more than a year now. In 2009, the singer divorced his wife of two years. During their time as a married couple, she gave birth to two boys, who are now 4 years old and 3 years old.
The ex-couple currently shares physical custody of their two sons, but Tameka, Usher’s ex-wife, is trying to change that. She has asked a court in Atlanta to reduce Usher’s amount of time with their children. She also claims that Usher is behind on child support and needs to be paying more in monthly payments due to his increase in income since the divorce.
Usher denies these allegations against him and is seeking more time with his children. The judge in their custody case ruled that they must come to a temporary arrangement through mediation or the court would take over their case and make a final decision for them.

In an exchange for complete privacy about their relationship, Cesar Millan has agreed to pay his ex-wife a large spousal support payment each month, on top of the child support payments.
The dog whisperer and his wife were together for 16 years, and although the actual divorce paperwork was filed over two years ago, both parties have just recently agreed to the terms of their divorce.
Cesar will pay his now ex-wife, Ilusion, an initial $400,000, and then each month afterward he will transfer $33,000 into her account. That amount was calculated by adding the $23,000 for monthly spousal support with the $10,000 for monthly child support that was agreed upon.
