On Wednesday, February 19, Fulton County Superior Judge Robert McBurney ordered Reverend Martin Luther King Jr.’s daughter, Bernice to surrender possession of the reverend’s Bible – which President Barack Obama used when he was sworn in for his second term – and his 1964 Nobel Peace Prize. He ordered the items to be placed in a safety deposit box that only the court can have access to until the estate battle among the civil rights leader’s children has been resolved.

McBurney did not set a timeline for Bernice to surrender the items to the court.

The declaration is the latest development in the estate battle over possession of these two items between King’s daughter and his two sons, Dexter King and Martin Luther King III.

A finding of a new study recently published in the journal Social Science Research shows that accident rates for divorced people, along with people who are less educated, are higher than those who are happily married.

Authors of the study took note of the lifestyle of 1.3 million Americans aged 18 and above between 1986 and 2006 and concluded that divorced people are more prone to being killed due to accidents, such as fire or poisoning, than married people.

The study’s lead author Justin Denney, an assistant sociology professor at Rice University in Houston, Texas, said a factor as to why married couples’ lives last longer and are healthier as compared to divorced people is because married folk have a tendency to support each other in staying healthy and are readily at hand to help one another during times of health emergencies.

A settlement was reached regarding the divorce case of 31-year-old NBA star Dwayne Wade and now ex-wife Siohvaughn Funches during court proceedings on Monday, July 22 in Chicago.

The legal battle, which began in 2007 when Wade filed for divorce, finally ended as the former couple agreed to a financial settlement in which Wade is expected to pay Funches $5 million. Funches was also awarded a mansion in Chicago and four luxury vehicles. Both parties were ordered to abide with a “non-disparage” agreement that prohibits them from making degrading comments about each other in public.

Court records show that long before the settlement was reached, Funches sued the Miami Heat guard regarding not being given her share of the income from endorsement contracts. After the settlement though, Funches’ lawsuit was dismissed.
